FOREWORD by Ken Cleaver, Ph.D. “And if you are asked about your Christian hope, always be ready to explain it.” (1 Peter 3:15b, NLT) During my childhood years, most everyone around me was a Christian. I was raised in a Christian home, attended a Christian church and its school, had mostly Christian friends, and spent most of my nights, weekends, and summers with Christians too. My Christian teachers did a great job at teaching me the content of the Bible, and over the years I memorized many of its verses. Although my faith in God and His Word was real, I was missing something crucial. I seemed to “crash and burn” every time I tried to explain my faith to a non-Christian friend or answer their tough questions about God and life. I had been taught nice, neat, tidy Sunday school answers to the easier questions, but the tougher questions on touchy subjects asked outside of the church walls posed a formidable challenge for me. Outside of the church walls the authority of the Bible was not assumed, and God’s choices—especially about suffering and evil—were questioned. For that matter, even the idea of absolute truth or the existence of God was doubted. How was I supposed to have a serious conversation with someone about God or life, if we could not even agree on a common source of authority? Sure, I could quote Bible verses to them, but they would respond, “so what?” or “how do I know that’s true?” In the face of these tough challenges, it seemed like there were only two choices: (a) run away or (b) figure out a better way to answer the world’s tough questions. Those who run away cannot help the people who ask the tough questions. The Bible encourages us: “And if you are asked about your Christian hope, always be ready to explain it. But you must do this in a gentle and respectful way (1 Peter 3:15, 16, NLT).” The questions will be asked whether we are prepared or not. Are you ready to explain the truth to people who deny it can be known, your faith to those who see faith as a weakness, and your hope to those who have lost hope? When someone asks you how a good and powerful God could allow suffering and evil to continue in the world, will you know how to respond? Are you prepared to show how God’s Word and His love address the deepest and broadest concerns of our lives? Beyond having good answers to tough questions on touchy subjects, are you yourself convinced that your answers are true? In Four Letter Words Bill Giovannetti gets right to the heart of these matters and equips Christians with well-thought-out ideas about how to turn challenges to our faith into opportunities to share God’s love and truth to a generation in need of Him. You will come away from this book not only better prepared to answer questions but also greatly encouraged in the truth and power of your faith. We do not need to be ashamed of the good news about Jesus! As a matter of fact, that good news is the power of God at work to save everyone who believes from their sin (Romans 1:16). The truth does not restrict us; it frees us to think and live the way we were designed to in the first place. I appreciate the way that Giovannetti deals directly with tough issues on touchy subjects. He answers difficult questions with straightforward language and ideas. You will not need a seminary degree to read this book, but you may feel like you got one when you are done reading it. I highly recommend this book to all who want to be ready to answer questions about the Christian faith.
